Expert doubts ShotSpotter would have caught July 4 gunfire

A BU political science professor, Spencer Piston, says ShotSpotter likely would not have detected the gunfire that killed city employee Xavier Bautista, because the system's terms of service put it in fireworks-suppression mode for 48 hours before and after Independence Day and may have classified the shot as a firework. The claim complicates arguments from police unions and Councillor Tim Flaherty, who blamed the City Council's vote to remove ShotSpotter for delaying emergency aid. Supporters of the acoustic detection system, in use in Cambridge since 2014, have seized on the shooting to call for its return.
