New England Conservatory Building Designated City Landmark

The Boston Landmarks Commission approved landmark status for the New England Conservatory's Renaissance Revival building at 290 Huntington Avenue, which was completed in 1902. Founded in 1867 by Eben Tourjee, NEC is the oldest independent school of music in the United States, and its Jordan Hall is among the world's most acclaimed halls of its size for acoustics. Preservation officials note that Coretta Scott met her future husband, Martin Luther King Jr., on the building's steps while she was a student there.
