Somerville Homeless Coalition opens expanded College Ave. shelter

The Somerville Homeless Coalition has finished relocating its adult shelter to First Church Somerville at 89 College Ave., expanding capacity from 16 to 26 beds. The roughly 4,000-square-foot space includes three dormitory areas, a kitchen, bathrooms and a multipurpose room, along with an accessible bathroom and shower; it replaces the coalition's deteriorating former site at 64 College Ave., which operated for about four decades and was not accessible to people with mobility disabilities. City leaders and community members gathered Monday, Aug. 10, to mark the opening.
