Council approves police body-camera grant after contentious vote

The Somerville City Council voted 7-4 to accept a $231,635 state grant for police body-worn cameras, following a three-and-a-half-hour special meeting held virtually while the committee is on break. Much of the opposition centered on the devices' financial demands amid budget cuts and layoffs, and on the lack of a promised police oversight body. Mayor Jake Wilson agreed to work with councilors on civilian oversight policy this fall; the grant money must be spent and cameras in the city's possession by Aug. 31.
