Kendall Square substation to power Cambridge's electrification push

Crews are finishing the shell of a 35,000-square-foot underground substation in Kendall Square, which Eversource says will be the country's largest when it opens in 2029. It is the centerpiece of the $1.84 billion Greater Cambridge Energy Program, intended to relieve the overburdened East Cambridge substation and add grid capacity and reliability. Officials said the added capacity is meant to let residents convert to electric heat pumps and to support EV charging and commercial electrification, with 2050 as the target horizon.
