Somerville Firefighter Arrested in $14,000 World Cup Ticket Scam

The Middlesex District Attorney's office says Robert Whelan, 50, a Somerville Fire Department firefighter, took more than $14,000 from victims by claiming his Patriots season ticket status gave him priority access to FIFA World Cup tickets that were never delivered. Prosecutors say he sent fake email confirmations and, under pressure to repay, produced a forged email from the pension board president appearing to approve a $157,000 withdrawal. Whelan is charged with larceny over $250 by false pretense, forgery of a document and uttering a false instrument, and is expected in Somerville District Court on Monday.
