Boston presses Army Corps for stronger Charlestown flood protection
Boston submitted formal comments Sept. 15 on the Army Corps of Engineers' draft coastal storm feasibility report, seeking full federal funding for a Charlestown flood barrier running from the Navy Yard to Little Mystic Channel and covering the Charlestown Community Center. The city said it agrees with the Corps' findings on coastal flood risk, including at least 42 inches of sea level rise and at least $54 billion in damages by 2090 without action, and that "no action" is not an option. Boston notes it has built $48 million in coastal resilience projects over the past decade, has $32 million more under construction and $59 million planned over the next five years, while the non-federal share of the full plan would be at least $3.5 billion.
