MassDOT Breaks Ground on $1.2B North Station Draw One Bridge
MassDOT and MBTA officials broke ground Thursday on a $1.2 billion replacement for the 1931 Draw One Bridge over the Charles River, swapping the near-century-old structure for a modern six-track vertical lift span with new track and signal work along the northside corridor. The bridge carries Commuter Rail service on the Haverhill, Lowell, Newburyport/Rockport and Fitchburg lines plus Amtrak Downeaster trains, with more than 11 million passengers crossing each year. Gov. Maura Healey said the state fought for federal funding for the project, which she tied to thousands of jobs and more reliable service.
