Blood shortage forces MGH to cancel patient transfusion

Colleen O'Neill, a 62-year-old New Hampshire woman with severe anemia, says she had already signed the paperwork for a transfusion at Massachusetts General Hospital on Aug. 14 when the order was pulled hours later because there wasn't enough blood available. Staff told her the supply had to be preserved, as a nationwide shortage strains stocks across Massachusetts and the country. "They can be the one in the next accident that can't get blood," O'Neill said, urging others to pay attention.
