Central Square Inquest Opens in Fatal Police Shooting of Woodworth

A district court judge on Wednesday began a formal examination of the facts around the Aug. 21 fatal police shooting of 64-year-old William Woodworth in Central Square. Police say Woodworth had just gotten out of his car when he allegedly pointed a handgun at officers; multiple shots were fired after an unsuccessful attempt to disarm him, and a loaded firearm was found at the scene. The inquest, overseen by Judge Holly Broadbent, cannot result in criminal charges but reviews all evidence, including witness interviews and video and audio recordings, to determine whether the death may have resulted from a crime.
