Council Orders Study on Licensing Reform, Late-Night Alcohol Pilot
At Monday's special summer meeting, councillors passed two policy orders directing City Manager Yi-An Huang to study restructuring the three-member Licensing Commission and to pursue a year-long pilot extending alcohol service to 3 a.m. The commission's makeup was set by state law in 1919, so changing it would likely require a home rule petition approved by the state legislature. Central Square business owners, including La Fabrica's Dennis Benzan and Yamba Market's Sean Hope, spoke in support after the commission's earlier proposed restrictions drew criticism.

Cambridge Council Votes 6-3 to Temporarily Restore ShotSpotter
On Aug. 3, the Cambridge City Council voted 6-3 to reinstate ShotSpotter gunshot-detection technology for 90 days and form a resident assembly to review its effectiveness and privacy impact, following the fatal July 4 shooting of DPW worker Xavier Bautista near Sennott Park. Acting Police Commissioner Pauline Wells said she welcomes its return, calling it one tool among many for investigations.
