Cambridge City Council Weighs Temporary Return of ShotSpotter

The City Council took up reinstating the ShotSpotter gunshot-detection system at its Aug. 3 meeting, about a month after 32-year-old Xavier Bautista was shot and killed while walking to work early on July 4. The council had voted in May to discontinue the system after dozens of residents said at public hearings that it invaded their privacy and disproportionately affected minority neighborhoods. Police say Bautista was shot around 4:30 a.m. but was not found until roughly an hour later, prompting some to question whether the technology could have made a difference.
