Belmont Emergency Management is passing along a National Weather Service heat advisory in effect until 8 p.m. Friday, with heat index values up to 99 expected. Officials urge residents to drink fluids, stay in air conditioning, avoid the sun, reschedule strenuous activity to early morning or evening, and check on relatives and neighbors; children and pets should never be left in vehicles. Air-conditioned respite is available Friday at the Beech Street Center, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the Belmont Public Library, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
