Downtown safety task force rolls out new measures after violent stretch

About 75 agencies — police, transit and university police, community groups, the mayor's office and the district attorney's office — met Wednesday night for the One Downtown Task Force's public safety working session, reviewing hotspots block by block. Changes begin this week, including more coordinated Boston Police, Transit Police, university police and private security operations, plus closer work with homeless shelter providers and the courts. The area around Tremont Street has seen five shootings in the past month, along with the beating death of 35-year-old Jonathan Sanon and a daylight stabbing last Friday; Councilor Ed Flynn says downtown needs more patrols despite the city's police staffing shortage.
