Centuries-old gravestone of free Black man restored in Granary

Mayor Michelle Wu and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department announced the rediscovery and restoration of a gravestone at Granary Burying Ground belonging to Boston, a free Black man who died in 1728/29. The marker had been obscured for decades and was absent from modern surveys of the site; it surfaced during a conservation project there. Wu called it likely one of the oldest markers of a free Black person in America, remembering a man described as both loved by his neighbors and respected in his community.
