FTA Ends Direct Safety Oversight of MBTA
The Federal Transit Administration has ended its direct safety oversight of the MBTA after more than four years, returning remaining directives to the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities. Gov. Maura Healey announced the move, citing improvements following a Red Line fatality in 2022 that prompted federal inspection. The FTA's supervision had identified four areas needing immediate action: track infrastructure, control center, train yards, and employee certification.
