Charles River algae advisory remains in effect

The Boston Public Health Commission's Aug. 20 advisory about a cyanobacteria bloom in the Charles River Lower Basin, downstream of the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge, is still active. State Department of Public Health staff found cyanobacteria exceeding state guidelines for recreational waterbodies; the algae can produce toxins that make people and pets sick. Residents are urged to avoid contact with the water and shoreline algae, including swimming, and to keep dogs from swimming in or drinking the water, rinsing off immediately after any contact.
