Governor Healey announces $140M for Haverhill Line rail upgrades

Gov. Maura Healey announced Aug. 14 that the MBTA won $139.6 million from the Federal Railroad Administration for the Haverhill Double-Track Project, which will add about 6.8 miles of new track between Reading and Andover so trains heading in opposite directions no longer wait for one another. The award covers final design and construction, and includes high-level platforms at four stations — Reading, North Wilmington, Ballardvale and Andover — to improve accessibility. The project also modernizes signals to improve safety at 15 rail crossings.
