1968 sewer main blamed for Horn Bridge odor
August 13, 2026
Top story
Decades-old sewer main tied to Horn Bridge sewage smell
DPW Deputy Director of Operations Jeffrey Crane told the Select Board on Aug. 11 that a 24-inch sewer main installed in 1968 is the root cause of the odor plaguing the Horn Bridge area and Abbot Bridge Drive neighborhood. Sewage passes through a siphon under the Shawsheen River, but trapped air backs up into two connected local lines and escapes into the neighborhood. After a year of fixes — lining about 6,000 feet of main in fall 2025, venting manholes, an air scrubber and an in-line air jumper — the town now plans liquid-phase testing in September.
