Officials Blast USPS Over Likely Permanent Closure of Allston Post Office
Allston residents learned this month that the U.S. Postal Service no longer plans to reestablish a branch in the neighborhood, which has gone nearly seven years without one. At a City Council hearing Tuesday called by Council President Liz Breadon, local and state officials criticized the reversal, with Sen. Ed Markey saying the neighborhood "was promised a post office, and they deserve a post office." The move comes as USPS faces what federal officials describe as a severe financial crisis, with warnings it could run out of money by February.
